If all the other kids posted a census meme, would I? [Mar. 11th, 2011|01:26 pm]
I guess so.

2011: living in a condo (2br + den) in downtown Mpls with all my books.

2001: living in a co-op (1br) on the Upper West Side that was taken over by books (with more in 3 storage units and my parents' attic)

1991: same co-op, fewer books

1981: studio apartment on the Upper East Side with relatively few (for me) books

1971: my parents' 4br house in Scarsdale and college dorms in Cambridge MA

1961: my parents' 3br house in Queens

1951: pre-existent

An IPv4 prefix walks into a bar [Feb. 7th, 2011|10:16 pm]
and says "Gimme a CIDR, I'm exhausted."

An IPv6 prefix sits down at the bar. Nobody talks to him.

"That isn't right. It isn't even wrong." [Jan. 27th, 2011|09:02 am]
According to Fox News, Web developers have tried to compensate for this problem by creating IPv6 -- a system that recognizes six-digit IP addresses rather than four-digit ones.

You Are CURVES AHEAD
When you're confronted with a problem, you take it on immediately - but with your eyes wide open.
You deal with stress well. You take things as they come, and you don't panic.

In fact, you often enjoy challenging situations. Difficulty makes you feel alive.
You are alert and observant. You notice every twist and turn in the road.

Windycon Report [Nov. 16th, 2008|01:05 am]
At Fannish Feud Friday night, the question was "Other than a guitar, name an instrument found at a filksing." Tom Smith: "pass".

Saturday, the convention managed to schedule a panel with six participants, including one of the Guests of Honor, into a room that the Fire Marshall limited to 15 people.

Northworst annoyance [Jul. 18th, 2008|06:51 am]
I have a 7:20 AM flight to Boston for Readercon. NW emails me at 4:20, saying it's on time. I get to the airport at 6:20, and the gate says it's delayed until 8. The arriving plane is now predicted to arrive at 7:21, from Alaska.

Sure, they can turn it around in 40 minutes.

Sure, they didn't know 2 hours ago that the arriving plane was going to be late so they could have let me spend a bit more time at home.

I'm signed up for txt message notification about flights; I haven't heard about this one yet, an hour and a half in advance. They're supposed to be sent 3 hours in advance. I wonder if it will claim the flight is still on time when they get around to sending it.

Added: At 7:55, they still showed an 8:00 departure, despite the fact that they hadn't started boarding yet.

Stuck at LGA overnight [Jun. 29th, 2008|05:48 pm]
I was supposed to be on the NW 6 PM flight; it got canceled, and they rebooked me on the 8:35. (Nice of them to tell me; I got a phone message after 5 PM, when I'd already learned from calling them.)

While I was sitting in the WorldClub, the 8:35 got canceled, and the best they could guarantee me was the 11:35 tomorrow.

NW claimed the problem was due to weather/air traffic control, hence they wouldn't help me with a hotel room.

Fortunately, Priceline would, so I'm paying only a slightly extortionate rate (around $50 less than the hotel asked directly when I called).

They keep canceling flights, so I'm almost as glad that they couldn't rebook me to get me out tonight via many connections (I'd have taken that for the better chance of getting home tonight and the extra miles).

So now to the hotel and bed, so I can get back to LGA around 5 AM and hope enough people don't get there that they'll let me on the 6 AM flight.

But at least seeing my parents for their anniversary (last Friday) was worth the trip.

McCain's store used to allow user reviews. They're gone now, but some were preserved.

Looking at the source on McCain's store site, we see how much his campaign cares about minor things like honesty and other people's copyrights.
